QUESTIONNAIRE:
What is your favorite diversion? Hobbies, indulgences, vices? Would you put off important things for that diversion, or would you be more strict about how you spend your time and/or money?Oh I don't have a lot of hobbies these days outside of just research for research's sake. Ursula laughs anxiously, tugging at the brim of her hat.
A great benefit of being a resident professor at Luna Nova is that I get access to all the archives there, and I can just pour over them to my liking in my downtime. Often my nights are spent with a glass of wine and some old grimoire.
[ She seems keenly aware of how nerdy and, probably, a little pathetic this all sounds, fidgeting with her hands. ]
I don't... have much of a personal life outside of that. And really, I don't mind. But if I had to say the one thing I enjoy the most, it's just... stargazing. Beholding the stars, reading them, tracing out their paths and stories, reading the energy between them, how all of it interacts together not just in the heavens, but with us...
You should try it some time. Just look up at the night sky... It's a place where dreams are born.
[ Oops, she got a little poetic there, laughing nervously again and fiddling with her hat. ]
U-um, of course, that is... if you're into that kind of thing!
What are your greatest regrets, if you have any? What would you have done differently?That's... [ Very personal, she wants to say, but the point of this interview is to be honest, she remembers. ]
I have... quite a few of those, really. But the one that hangs over me the most... [ She takes a deep breath, turning her gaze to the side, to the middle distance, to just... nothing. ]
One of my students... her ability to use magic is stunted. It's not because of a lack of talent, it's more like... a disability. And... I'm the reason she has this disability. I willfully used a technique, in the past, that allowed me to absorb the magical potential of other people in order to fuel my own mana, allowing me to perform otherwise impossible feats.
[ She doesn't quite elaborate on the details, because ultimately they're not actually that important. The person she was then, the reason she was doing it, none if it amounted to any amount of worth that remotely justified what she'd done. She could make excuses or allow context to pardon her, but that would just be running away, again... ]
She was one of the victims of this technique. She was someone who looked up to Shiny Chariot as her hero, her inspiration, the catalyst of her passion for magic... and that same person stole all of that away from her, just so they could fulfill their own goals.
[ Her hands clench. Her voice is shaking. ]
I need to change that. It's not fair to Akko, to have so much passion and yet have to struggle so hard, all because of something selfish that I did. I need this contract... so I can give her a second chance, to live her dream. My own dream... doesn't matter anymore.
How do you define "failure"? How do you deal with the consequences of failure, from light to severe? As 'Shiny Chariot', as famous as I was, as popular as my shows got at their peak, all of that was failure. The only time I had any success was thanks to that shortcut I willfully took, to hold on to that selfish dream. In the end, failure was more than what I deserved.
[ Every word drips with guilt. They feel heavy, chained by the burdens of shame. ]
What you see before you, 'Ursula Callistis' is both punishment and... escape. In truth, I never faced the actual consequences of anything I did. I just... ran away. Some might see being shamed into non-existence was a fitting end for 'Shiny Chariot' but...
[ She takes a few deep breaths, straightening herself out and splaying her fingers over her knees. ]
... Maybe in my time here, I'll finally be made to give penance. I'm not sure how or when, but... I can't just run away, here, can I?
Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?[ Part of her feels like the whole interview was leading up to this, and yet it still catches her a little off guard. Her eyes widen, and she has to wonder in what scenario anyone would ever consider her for a job like that. And then she realizes well... this probably all is some sort of divine wrath, isn't it?
But... She shakes her head. ]
I couldn't do it. I can't do it, even in the name of my wish. If that means being punished in some way, so be it. But I can't... I can't do that. I won't even pretend I could, even in absolute desperation. I couldn't replace one shame with another... I can't make myself a monster just for Akko's sake, or she'd never forgive me.
I'm sorry... They'd have to find someone else.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Thankfully, once again, the wiki has me covered here: https://little-witch-academia.fandom.com/wiki/Ursula_Callistis#Abilities_and_Equipment
Though I can provide more details upon request.
SUITABILITY: Ursula's canon generally does not deal with heavy topics like this; there isn't much in the way of vice or overt violence. However Ursula is an adult woman who is capable when called upon. Being an active participant in the grimier nature of the game would take more time with her, but it's not impossible to imagine that she'd find away to adapt, especially with her contract payment on the line. She would not become unplayable in darker scenarios.
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten ClanAn absolute poor fit for Ursula and honestly not for the ways that are immediately obvious. She's actually in pretty exceptional physical condition, and able to use her magic to even further enhance that. Also, while it's less of a thing in the TV anime, it's a known thing that she has a fond appreciation for wine (though hardly in excess). No, the thing that makes Ursula a horrible fit for Shuten is that she has a pronounced dishonesty with herself. The whole "Ursula Callistis" persona is partial fabrication, designed by Chariot du Nord to hide her true identity. She would certainly respect their commitment to their own community, but also the "might makes right" philosophy would sit poorly with her. The whole thing is just a big philosophical clash, and she'd struggle to fit in, much less work with them.
Tamamo ClanThis is at least a little more fitting. Chariot du Nord may have long put "Shiny Chariot" behind her, but that performer persona and desire to give others memorable experiences is still there on some level. What's more, on a philosophical level, the Tamamo Clan's virtues of wisdom and "showing one's tails" actually sound like something Ursula needs on just like, a deep personal level. It would help her reconcile with herself who she was, what she did, who she is now, and who she can still become. The hang-up kind of runs into the sex industry and Ursula is just... not prudish, but well. She has an anxiety disorder. And the pressures of the work in both sexual entertainment or even just regular hospitality would exasperate that disorder. It'd be difficult for her to do actual work within the clan, even if it's a philosophical fit.
Sutoku AllianceUnlike with the Tamamo Clan, this would both be a philosophical fit AND she could easily find herself working within their systems. Ursula obviously values information; she's a teacher, after all. She understands that knowledge, above anything grants someone the edge in a confrontational situation. She stumbled in her early days as a student witch, but hard studying is what made her into the extraordinary talent she'd become as Shiny Chariot. What's more, the entertainment industry attached to Sutoku is well more what she's used to (even if she'd sooner die than take on a stage persona again, but hey. stuff happens). Philosophically speaking, she gels well with the idea of a sum that's greater than its parts. Ursula is drawn to the underdog struggle, and knows she has the ability to help where needed here.
Department of the EnmaThe witching authority in LWA's world is... vague. Ursula doesn't really interact with the power politics of her universe, but she is nothing if not used to being the put-upon junior within an ostensibly orderly system. But she just doesn't have much value for order, herself. She believes in the system of Luna Nova as far as it a means of guiding young witches to their future, but not really as an institution meant to impose some sort of order on magic society. She likes the headmistress! She doesn't get along with most of the senior staff. I feel like that sums up a... lot about it. She can do the work, but there's not much character growth or fulfillment to be had here.
